Remember when we were all in middle/high school, and had to take those tests at the beginning of each course to gauge where we were in terms of the subject matter before we learned it, and then take the same exact test at the end of the class to see if we actually made any improvement?
I figure my first official “PR blog entry” should apply the same principle.
I first started blogging back in middle school, the “pre-teen” age, when everyone who was anyone had to have an Internet presence (mind you, we were all using AOL dial-up at that point). We wrote entries on various blog platform sites (back then just called “online journals”), talking about whatever topics we thought would help us achieve our ultimate goal the fastest–more comments than anyone else, of course! I guess you could say that was the beginning of the “Myspace/Facebook craze” of today.
Anyways, after that period in my life I jumped back and forth between different blog platforms, when I was “trying to figure out who I was,” and nothing ever really stuck.
Fast forward a few years to today, and my main method of “blogging” is basically just posting things on Facebook. I don’t even have a Myspace anymore. (Don’t tell Tom, but the popularity/usage of his site by college students, or even those in high school, is going downhill. Fast.)
In regards to Twitter, I joined at the beginning of 2009 out of sheer curiousity. I had one or two friends who already had one, one of whom was always raving about being able to follow celebrities. (I guess at this point you should know some background information on me. Know those celebrity magazines in every check-out line at the grocery store, which no one ever admits to reading yet they have readership numbers in the millions? … … I am an avid celebrity magazine reader. I will admit it, okay?!)
So obviously when my friend told me she was following celebrities, I knew I had to get an account, too. I have attempted on several occasions to try and get a celebrity to “tweet” me, but nothing so far. My friend got “tweeted” just last week by Pee Wee, a famous pop singer in Latin America. You can bet we were both pretty excited about that! It can only go uphill from there, right?
Anyways, the point of all this rambling is to let you know, in a long-form sort of way, that I really don’t have much experience in using social media as a PR strategy. I am looking forward to being able to incorporate them into my future profession, because I grew up with them…and let’s face it, they are fun!
I will be updating this site three times a week, for a “PR Tactics and Techniques” class at IUPUI. Feel free to stop by from time to time and give me feedback!
